DATE REPORTED:           September 21, 2021

LOCATION OCCURRED: 1900 block of Elkerton Avenue, Kalamazoo Township

INCIDENT SUMMARY:

Officers from the Township of Kalamazoo Police Department were called to the 1900 block of Elkerton Ave. on the report of a gunshot in the area at approximately 12:20 this morning.  Officers discovered a deceased 23-year-old Kalamazoo Township man on the ground outside his apartment with an apparent gunshot wound.  Medical personnel were called to respond and despite rescue efforts the subject was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nearly two (2) years to the day of the incident, Jayshaun Bishop appeared in front of the Hon. Judge Ken Barnard of Kalamazoo’s Ninth Circuit Court.  Bishop pled guilty to Second Degree Murder and Felony Firearm in the homicide of Collin Mitchell.  Bishop was sentenced to the following upon entering his plea:

  • Count 1: 2nd Degree Murder – 23-50 years
  • Count 2: Felony Firearm – 2 years

SUSPECT:  Jayshaun Bishop, a 24-year-old Kalamazoo man.

VICTIM:   The victim has been positively identified as Collin Mitchell, a 23-year-old resident of the apartment complex where this incident occurred.
